Are you well-rested?

This week I had the pleasure of joining a friend at a women's bible study at her church. I've been feeling awful since the semester began because I haven't been able to attend my church's service on Wednesday nights due to an academic obligation. I don't believe in coincidence, so I know it was God's doing to have me connect with this fabulous school mom, get us talking about faith and sharing about our churches. The invite was so genuine and warm that I couldn't resist joining her. And I'm so glad I did!

The name of the book used for the study is totally unimportant right now (BUT I will be adding more reflection pieces concerning the book in the weeks to come). For now, what I really want to share is a simple sentence that spoken in this gathering. Of the many profound words of encouragement and wisdom, this stood out to me most. Ready?

"You know what you rest in by what you reach for." MIND! BLOWN!

It got me thinking... 'What do I reach for in times of distress?' 'Who to I turn to in times of chaos?' 'Where do I turn for answers in times of confusion?' The answers will tell a story quite the contrary of what I claim to believe.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 NIV

...when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2 KJV

My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest. Exodus 33:14 NIV

According to the Christian faith, Christ is the one who we should go to when we are burdened, tired, overwhelmed, frustrated, angry, sorrowful, confused, anxious, lonely, lost, afraid, annoyed, exhausted, ashamed, broke, broken, wounded, double-minded, tearful, fearful, empty, enraged, flustered, boxed-in, at my wits end... but...

What have we (or who have we) really been reaching for? Parents, children, a spouse, or friends? Social media, avoidance, addiction, pity- parties, or sex. There is nothing wrong with seeking counsel, good conversation, or encouragement... I mean, i firmly believe in allllllll of that. But none of these options offer REST!

Godly rest.

Soul rest.
