Getting Below the Surface
Are you alive or are you living? At first glance they may seem to be the same thing. But after a closer look, you will see that they are completely different.
Being alive... Sure being alive is a blessing. You have the gift of life, a portion of strength to get you from one activity to the next, and mental fortitude to be in your right mind. Being alive means that you can go to school and work, you can complete your daily tasks and coast from day to day. Being alive is living on the surface.
Living, fully living, means that you maintain a level of courage to go beyond the surface. Few of us challenge ourselves to do that. Living is being fully present in each moment that you are given while alive. It means taking in the sights and sounds around us. Savoring the food we eat. Fully feeling our emotional experience, having gratefulness in our hearts, and a desire for a vibrant connectedness with all creation and the creator.
When was the last time you danced like no one was watching, sang along to your favorite song without fear of judgement? When was the last time you felt your heartbreak or felt it fill with joy and stopped to take it in, sit in it, process it and grow through it? When was the last time you laughed with your children until your belly ached instead of insisting that they are silent? Or the last time you dug deep beyond your anger to assess where your hurt comes from?
It is easy to go with the flow and skate through life. Truth is, no one may ever notice... not even you. But I dare you to take a closer look. Examine if you are living a full life. You do know that we are here for a limited time only, right? We've only got one shot to do this thing called life! I cannot imagine a life in which I settle, a life that I accept the surface as all there is. I can only imagine that our lives are like the ocean. There are depths of beautiful life that we cannot access or appreciate at first glance. If there can be such color and such a refreshing at the surface, just picture how much more there is if we reach down deeper into ourselves, to find a richness of life that must be sought after.
I don't want to simply be alive, I want to live and engage wholeheartedly... and I want the same for you. Let's move beyond the mundane. Dive below the surface into more meaningful experiences, relationships, and existence.
